The Faculty of Humanities

The University of Southampton Faculty of Humanities is a world leading centre for research in ArchaeologyEnglishFilmHistoryModern LanguagesMusic and Philosophy. It is home to the cross-disciplinary Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Culture, as well as pioneering research in Digital Humanties. The Faculty is located on the University of Southampton’s Avenue Campus (SO17 1BF)

Getting Here

The city of Southampton can be reached easily by both road and rail. The University of Southampton’s Avenue Campus, which houses the discipline of Archaeology, is located around 2 miles from the town centre, Southampton Central railway station as well as Southampton Coach Station, and is a short trip from these by either taxi or bus.

Southampton is served by Southampton Airport, which can be reached directly from Paris, Malaga, Verona, Frankfurt amongst other European cities, as well as many locations in the UK. Southampton is also easily accessible via London Heathrow and London Gatwick airports, by either coach or train. For more information on arriving from abroad see the university website.

Accommodation

The symposium cannot provide accommodation within the university. However, there are several hotels and bed & breakfasts that we would recommend. There are a number of very affordable bed and breakfasts a short walk from the faculty, or there are hotels in central Southampton (a taxi or bus ride away).

1) Elizabeth House Hotel
Located on The Avenue, around 15 minutes walk from the Faculty of Humanities, Elizabeth House Hotel has 27 rooms all with en-suite bathrooms. It has free wi-fi, as well as a bar and bistro.
Rate: £51.50/night inc. breakfast

2) Highfield House Hotel
Located near the shops and bars of Portswood High Street, this hotel is only 10 minutes walk to the Department of Archaeology. Free wifi. Rate: £54/night single (inc. breakfast),  £64/night  double or twin (inc. breakfast)

3) Banister House 
Located just off The Avenue it is around 20 minutes walk from the Department of Archaeology.
Rate: £54/night twin or double

4) Travelodge
There is a Travelodge on Lodge Rd, about 15 minutes walk from the Department of Archaeology. Probably the cheapest option, though rates are variable.
Rate: £15-£90/night double
